Mechanical behaviour and environmental impacts of a test road built with marine dredged sediments

The first objective of this work was to evaluate the compatibility of this material with current practice used to build roads with standard materials. In the second time, the impacts of time on the mechanical behaviour and the concentration of contaminants in the leachates, such as trace metals and chlorides of the used material, were evaluated.

Effects of salts and organic matter on Atterberg limits of dredged marine sediments

This paper examines the effects of treatments inducing the reduction of salts and the organic content on the Atterberg limits of marine dredged sediments. To define the liquid limits of the sediments, the results of the percussion-cup test and the fall cone test are compared for raw sediments and treated sediments. For the determination of the plastic limit, the results of the rolling test method are compared to the prediction of the fall cone test. Finally, the relationship between the water contents and the penetration depths between the liquid limit and the plastic limit is explored.

Mechanical behaviour of unsaturated marine sediments: experimental and theoretical approaches

In this work, five tests were carried out on synthetic marine sediments in order to identify the gas effect on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated marine sediments. Based on the experimental results obtained from this study, on previous constitutive models [Alonso, E.E., Gens, A., Josa A., 1990. A constitutive model for partially saturated soils. Géotechnique 40(3), 405–430; Gens, A., Alonso, E.E., 1992. A framework for the behaviour of unsaturated expansive clays. Can. Geotech. J. 29, 1013–1032] and on the relationship of Van Genuchten [Van Genuchten, M.Th., 1980.

Investigating the influence of dredged sludge material stabilized by pozzolanic binders on geotechnical properties

The main objectives of these experiments were to identify the influence of the binder especially fly ash, on the strength behavior and its strength durability on the extreme conditions. The improvement in mechanical properties such as optimum moisture content, and unconfined compressive strength values were investigated.

Using speciated isotope dilution with GC - inductively coupled Plasma MS to determine and unravel the artificial formation of monomethylmercury in certified reference sediments

A procedure for SID-MS analysis of MMHg in sediments has been developed by using open-focused microwave extraction, ethylation, and CGC-ICP-MS detection. Although highly precise, the isotope dilution procedure is not free of interference, and artificial MMHg formation was detected. Systematic experiments allowed determination of the sources and definition of conditions for controlling the artifact formation during analytical determinations.

Speciation patterns of heavy metals in tropical estuarine anoxic and oxidized sediments by different sequential extraction schemes

The objectives of this study were to depict and compare the changes in the Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb, Fe and Mn speciation patterns on oxidation of tropical estuarine anoxic sediment samples using three selected sequential extraction schemes, namely three-stage (BCR), four-stage (Tessier et al., 1979.) and five-stage (Kersten and Forstner, 1986.) schemes.

Trace metal partitioning in marine sediments and sludges deposited off the coast of Barcelona (Spain)

As part of a study on the environmental impact of the sludges discharged on the littoral platform in front of Barcelona (Spain), marine sediment samples were analysed. Major components were determined and the Tessier sequential extraction procedure was applied to study Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn distribution in eleven samples taken at nine sampling sites.

Marine dredged sediments as new materials resource for road construction

Large volumes of sediments are dredged each year in Europe in order to maintain harbour activities. With the new European Union directives, harbour managers are encouraged to find environmentally sound solutions for these materials. This paper investigates the potential uses of Dunkirk marine dredged sediment as a new material resource for road building. The mineralogical composition of sediments is evaluated using X-ray diffraction and microscopy analysis.

The use of marine sediments as a pavement base material

In this study of the potential of using dredged marine sediments in road construction, the first objective is to determine the physical and mechanical characteristics of fine sediments dredged from a harbour in the north of France. The impacts of these materials on the environment are also explored. In the second stage, the characteristics of the fine sediment are enhanced for use as a road material.
